Samurai Scorpion Aluminum Kit (requires assembly)
|CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.|
Almost lifelike, OWI's aluminum non-venomous invertebrate building kit features a Scorpion that you assemble from metal and bendable aluminum parts. The Samurai Scorpion is comprised of two major parts: head and body. The head consists of a pair of eyes, mouth, and claws used to capture prey. The body contains eight legs, tail and curved aculeus (stinger). Did you know that scorpions are nocturnal? They often feed at night by lying still and surprising their prey (dinner). On the other hand, they are dinner for tarantulas, bats, and birds (especially owls). Let's talk more specifics about Samurai Scorpion. The kit contains 30 hard and soft pre-punched aluminum parts, 7 screws, 7 nuts, 3 springs, and even assembly tools are included. Its claws, arms, legs, and tail are all moveable.
* Assembled Size : 6.5in x 3.5in x 3in
* Unit Weight : 135g

Smaller than pictured, but cool factor still highNov 07, 2011
By G. Hartley
I had this kit in my wish list for a couple years before I finally purchased with a gift card. When the package arrived, I was glad the kit was a gift or I may have had some buyer's remorse. Much smaller than the pictures make it out to be. Yes, the dimensions are listed on the listing, but they say 9 x 6.5 x 1.5 inches. These are the dimensions for the BOX the kit comes in. The assembled scorpion is a bit over three inches long with the tail curled up as the picture shows. The screws are quite tiny. . .almost watch-sized, which actually helped because it made the kit more challenging (i.e "fun") to assemble. Other than the size, perhaps the next biggest disappointment was the springs in the front arms. They are completely non-functional. Just there to look cool.
The kit's 30 pieces assemble in about half an hour (probably more if a child is assembling). For the most part the pieces are well machined and thick enough for its size, but several pieces have to be bent in order to look/fit properly. This is part of the design and explained well enough in the instructions. In fact, the kit comes with a pretty cool multi-tool that served this purpose fine, but because of the bending, I seriously doubt anyone under 15 could assemble the kit without accidentally ruining it.
Nevertheless! This little scorpion is cool! My son's reaction when the box arrived was really gratifying (He offered to pay me $10 to let him keep the assembled kit in his room. I said, No way!) My disappointment wore off quickly and I'm overall pleased with the gleaming robotic bug stalking my desk.
Pros: Shiny! Robotic! Scorpion!
Watchmaker precision machining.
Cons: Tinier than pictured.
Hand-bending parts could cause despair.
(BTW: I know that scorpions are arachnids. . . not bugs. Creative license! Geez!)

This is an AWESOME model!Sep 01, 2009
My son loves the scorpion. It is one of the coolest models I've seen. My husband did make the comment that a ten year old would probably get frustrated trying to put it together, and would probably need assistance. Even so, when put together it seemed more durable than I had expected. It was machined very well. It also is more moveable than we expected. Claws, tail and legs all move freely! Good fun!

My nephew's first creation...Dec 28, 2010
My nephew loved putting this scorpion together.It was great to see him do something active instead of playing video games.He was dissappointed that a catalog of other things to build wasn't included.It was well worth the money.

Follow the Instructions step by step.Sep 11, 2012
There isn't much to say about this product other than follow instructions properly and you won't have problems assembling this cool model, mine came with all the tools, instructions, and parts necessary to put my scorpion together.Although the tools work they are pretty cheap and bend easily use your own if you have any or these will do just fine without applying to much pressure to them.Once your done and followed all the instructions you should have the results you desire in the end a Elenco OWI Samurai Scorpion fully functional and ready for action or display,I know because I assembled mine step by step and I still have it after 4 months.
